Available studies certifying compostability and biodegradability according to ASTM6868-21 standards, that sets the criteria for labeling end items—such as packaging or products—that incorporate biodegradable plastics or polymers as coatings or additives with paper or other substrates, and are designed to be aerobically composted in municipal or industrial composting facilities.
To be labeled as compostable under this standard, a product must meet three essential criteria:
Disintegration
The product must physically break down during the composting process so that it is not distinguishable in the finished compost.
Biodegradation
The materials must biologically degrade at a rate comparable to known compostable materials.
