## Compostable \& Biodegradable


## **Available studies certifying compostability and biodegradability according to ASTM6868-21 standards,** that sets the criteria for labeling end items---such as packaging or products---that incorporate biodegradable plastics or polymers as coatings or additives with paper or other substrates, and are designed to be aerobically composted in municipal or industrial composting facilities.

### **To be labeled as compostable under this standard, a product must meet three essential criteria:**

#### Disintegration

The product must physically break down during the composting process so that it is not distinguishable in the finished compost.

#### Biodegradation

The materials must biologically degrade at a rate comparable to known compostable materials.

#### No Adverse Effects

The compost resulting from the process must not negatively affect plant growth or the quality of the compost.
